ACS Moving Day! June 21st

Thank you to ALL of our families for your commitment and love for ACS! Again, we are asking for your help in a tangible way:
moving help!

• Your child(ren)’s teacher will be asking for your assistance in packing specific classrooms the week after school is out.
• We may need physical help during the weeks of June 9th and 16th in our current facility as we prepare to move.
• June 21st will be the actual physical move, with some possible work done the evening of June 20th. We will need MANY hands, muscles, and willing workers to load and unload trucks to move into our new classrooms!

It will take all of ACS working together to move our school! If you can help us, please sign up below with your availability. We truly do appreciate you!

Dear Parents,

Happy Summer! We have many pieces of information for you as we transition from our move:

The week of June 23rd, the school office will be functioning out of two different facilities. If you wish to buy SCRIP, take care of tuition, or pay off bills, please come to the 217 E. Wisconsin Ave. location, and Mrs. Kelly will be here to serve you. She will be available through the school cell phone at 450-8211 because our phone system will be functioning in the Holy Spirit location as of June 20th. (Please see the Business News below for specific instructions regarding Scrip orders.)

The new ACS main phone number will be 687-2700. Except for Mrs. Kelly, the rest of the office staff and administration will be available at our new phone number in the Holy Spirit facility. Because Holy Spirit Parish is running a Vacation Bible School in their facility that week, only authorized personnel will be allowed in the building. The only ACS authorized personnel are the staff and administration for the week of June 23rd. Please do not come to the Holy Spirit facility for business until July 9th.

Our lease does not begin until July 1st, and we are very grateful that Holy Spirit is letting us move our classrooms and offices before the end of June. This allows us to clean our current facility and have some down-time the week of July 4th. It also means that we need to respect their need for security for their VBS by not having any unauthorized persons coming to the doors their last week in their facility. I am sure you understand!

Even though we are going to be moving in to Holy Spirit on the 21st of June, all of our classrooms on the first floor will not be set up until after their VBS. Thus, the 7th and 8th of July, we will be moving furniture and boxes and desks to their proper location. We will have volunteers to help us, but there will not be time for parents and others to drop in to see the new building on those days. Please honor this request so we are able to get the teachers settled into their classrooms and the offices fully functioning. After our move, the office computers may not be up and functioning until July 9th as well. Please keep this in mind as you e-mail messages to us. Please be sure to call with any questions or with your Scrip orders.

Parent Parking Notes
For this summer AND for the school year, parents should park in the parking lot WEST of the church, not the parking lot at the front entrance. The front entrance parking lot is a shared lot between the parish and the school. Parents will need to get in the habit of parking in the proper area so that we are set to kindly share our new facility. More detailed information will be coming as we become closer to the first day of school.

We will miss you, Mrs. Schleicher!
Welcome to Mrs. Ebben, Mrs. Ten Pas, Mrs. Weber, and Mrs. Fitch!
It is with sadness that I tell you that Mrs. Helen Schleicher has elected to take this next year off from teaching. I will miss her; we will miss her, but she will be back to substitute and see us. But thanks be to God, because He has provided His teachers for the next school year in the early elementary grades. Mrs. Julie Ebben, a parent of three ACS graduates and former ACS first and second grade teacher, will be returning to that position this next year. She has been subbing over the last three years, and we are very glad to have her back. Her children will all be in college, and this is a perfect time for her to put her energies into our students.

We have also hired Mrs. Kristina Ten Pas to be the second grade teacher in the mornings. Mrs. Ten Pas has experience teaching in smaller private schools in the Milwaukee and Sheboygan areas and has been subbing over the last years as her husband’s job required many moves. They have settled into the Appleton area and attend Emmanuel Baptist Church. We are excited to have Kristina’s experience at this grade level, as well as her love for teaching and children. She will be helping with the move, so many of you will get to meet her then.

I am also happy to announce that we have hired Mrs. Paula Weber as our new ACS Pre-Kindergarten Director and Teacher. Mrs. Weber was a vital part of ACS as a parent, her husband served on our board, and all three of her children graduated from this school. She formerly helped administrate and teach at Little Rock Day Care sponsored by Christ the Rock. Paula is very excited for this opportunity, and it looks like she will have a full house in the Pre-K 3 and 4 programs, as our openings are filling fast. We have also hired Mrs. Beth Fitch to be her assistant teacher and to be in charge of serving our lunch program. Mrs. Fitch is from DePere and has experience in pre-school in the Green Bay area. As a matter of fact, she worked in the office at Green Bay Christian School.

God has brought us some very capable, well-trained, and experienced teachers who love Him and whose desire is to use their vocation in His service at ACS. It will be a good year as we all come together in our new location. God has been bringing new families over the last few weeks, so we may be calling you to extend the right hand of friendship to a new family over the summer. Our desire is to always have our new students meet our existing students over the summer so they are able to come into the new school year having friendships made.

Back-to-School Picnic and Kick-off Parent Meeting: August 21, 2008
We have a great meal planned for your whole family and babysitting available so you can be part of the Kick –off Parent Meeting. Clint Holden, our development advisor and true friend of ACS, will join us to share in our vision for the year as we dedicate this new year and this new facility to His Glory. We will serve dinner from 4:45 to 6:15 and have our meeting from 6:30 to 7:45. This is a MUST for every family, as we need to be united in purpose as we walk into the future together in the 2008-2009 school year.

Enjoy your summer!

Mrs. Tofte

p.s. See you June 20th and 21st for the BIG MOVE!

A typical day in Preschool at ACS is planned so that each child is able to experience God’s love personally,
while learning the importance of respecting others. We will learn and grow together!

Our curriculum is Bible-based, focusing on God as the center of our lives even at the simplest level.

OUR DAYS WILL INCLUDE:

Circle time: flag, Bible story, weather, calendar, colors, numbers, and letters.

Additional Activities: music and motion, story time, learning centers, art projects, science, cooking, large muscle activities, organized games, and show-and-tell.

If After Care is needed it will include: lunch, a rest time, one snack. Activities will reinforce what is learned in the morning through games, art projects, and large muscle activities.

Volunteer Picnic news: Due to our busy move to Kimberly after school ends for the year, we have chosen to cancel our annual Volunteer Picnic this year (originally scheduled for the end of May). However, if you have volunteered this year, and if you RSVP to our Back-to-School Picnic this coming August, we will give you a free dinner pass to that picnic! We truly do appreciate ALL of our volunteers, and we value the contributions that you make to keep our school running! Stay tuned for more information this summer….

WINTER WEATHER AND SCHOOL CLOSINGS

Just a reminder for the months ahead:

If the Appleton Area Public Schools close school due to weather, we will automatically be closed. ACS will call this closing in to the local television stations and the Christian and local radio stations. These closings are directly related to unsafe road or weather conditions.

Since we have students from many school districts that occasionally do close when Appleton chooses not to, ACS may choose to close even though the Appleton schools remain open. Always watch or listen for our name to appear in the scroll at the bottom of the screen or on the stations. It is a rare occasion when we close and the Appleton schools remain open, but it has happened, so be sure to listen and watch for our name to appear. If ACS does not appear in the listings, we will be open!

Do not call the school. Your first and best information will come from watching television and/or listening to the radio.

If the weather deteriorates during the school day and you think we might have to close early, do not call the school. Once again listen to the radio and/or watch television. If everyone tries to call the school it hinders our making and receiving the important calls that need to be made with bus companies and the radio/television station. Some parents may be at work and do not always have access to the radio or television and they will be calling us. Since we may have to call some parents, having the phone lines available is very important.

Obviously, if we close in the morning, there will be no Before Care. Please be sure you have alternative daycare in the case of such an event. After Care will operate if the school is closed during the day, but we would ask that you pick up your child as soon as possible so all staff is able to go home in daylight hours.

Thank you for making it a priority to keep well-informed about our policies and procedures and for keeping alert to the weather this time of year.

ACS Parent Prayer Group!

Ann Wittman is hosting a bi-weekly a parent prayer group in the music room! Any parent is welcome to attend! The meetings will be in the music room on the first Monday of each month, from 2:30pm – 3:15pm, and on the third Friday of each month, from 7:45am – 8:30am. They will focus on praying for ACS, its students, its faculty, and its staff. Please plan to attend if you are able to do so!

Below is a guide from Mrs. Wittman on how to pray for your children with the Scriptures.

HOW TO PRAY FOR YOUR CHILDREN

  1. That they will know Christ as Savior early in life (Psalm 63:1, 2 Tim 3:15).
  2. That they will have a hatred for sin (Psalm 97:10).
  3. That they will be caught when guilty (Psalm 119:71).
  4. That they will be protected from the evil one in each area of their lives: spiritually, emotionally, physically, sexually (John 17:15).
  5. That they will have a responsible attitude in all their interpersonal relationships (Daniel 6:3).
  6. That they will respect those in authority over them (Romans 13:1).
  7. That they will desire the right kinds of friends and be protected from the wrong friends (Prov 1:10).
  8. That they will be kept from the wrong mate and saved for the right one (2 Cor 6:14-17).
  9. That they, as well as those they marry, will be kept pure until (and through) marriage (1 Cor 6:18-20).
  10. That they will learn to totally (in humility) submit to God and to actively resist Satan in all circumstances (James 4:7).
  11. That they will be hedged in so they cannot find their way to the wrong people or wrong places, and that the wrong people cannot find their way to them (Zech 2:5).
  12. That they will be single-hearted, willing to be sold out to Jesus Christ (Romans 12:1-2).
  13. That they will discover the special plan God has for their lives (Jer 29:11).
  14. That they will not be deceived into unbelief or sin (Gal 6:7-8).

Prayer for Appleton Christian School

Holy God, Giver, Defender, and Redeemer: Use Appleton Christian School
as a home for the indwelling of your Spirit, as a center for the operation of your grace,
as a laboratory of your love.

Fill our teachers and our students with eagerness to learn of you, with trust in your faithfulness,
with the devotion of your Spirit, with patience for scholarship.

Help us to discover daily the correction for rebellion, the enlightenment for blindness,
the freedom of forgiveness.

Help us to translate our study into active faith, into joyful hope,
into constant love, for the sake of Jesus.
We pray this in his name. Amen

Hot Lunch Tickets

If you plan to take advantage of the ACS Hot Lunch Program, please review the following information. It is extremely helpful if you follow these procedures.

  • ALL lunches need to be paid for in advance. Any number of lunches and extra entrées may be purchased at one time, but no refunds will be issued.
    • $2.35 per lunch
    • $1.00 per extra entrée

Note: the Hot Lunch Program does not include milk. Milk is offered separately to accommodate our families that send bag lunches from home. If your child will be taking milk on a daily basis, whether as part of hot lunch or not, please pay for it by the quarter (only $10.75). Milk forms are distributed prior to each quarter.

  • Hot lunch payments are accepted on Monday mornings. If payment is sent in on a day other than Monday, it will not be posted until the following week.
  • ALL payments should be in an envelope with the following information clearly stated on the outside:
    1. Child's name
    2. Grade
    3. Number of lunches being purchased
    4. Number of extra entrées
    5. Total amount enclosed

Multiple children can be paid for with one check in the envelope as long as the above information for each child is included on the outside of the envelope.

Teachers and Office Staff are not responsible for handling loose cash and figuring out, for instance, how many lunches $20.00 will buy. Use your MENU to plan ahead how many lunches will be needed and send the correct payment in advance - either weekly or monthly. For bookkeeping purposes, change will not be carried over to the next week. It will be deposited in the school’s general account.

New Addition to the ACS Handbook

Field Trip Policy
Fees paid for field trips cover the exact cost of the trip and cannot be refunded if a student is not able to participate. The cost to ACS for the trip does not change after arrangements have been made.

For an updated handbook, please visit the school office lobby. If you have any questions, please contact Mrs. Tofte, and she will be pleased to talk with you.

Telephone Use

Students will be charged 25¢ to use the office phone for making calls that are not of an emergency basis. Forgotten books, permission slips, lunch, gym or sports clothes, or arranging for a ride home do not constitute an emergency. In the event of a cancelled school-sponsored event or activity, calls may be made at no charge. Please have your child carry change at all times if he or she has a tendency to forget these kinds of things.

Parents should make all necessary ride arrangements prior to bringing your children to school. Make sure your children know whom they are supposed to be riding home with.

Notice to Parents Planning to be Out-of-Town

If you plan to be out of town and are making arrangements for your child(ren) to be in someone else's care, please notify the school office of your arrangements. We need to be aware of this information in case of an emergency.

Attendance and Extra-Curricular Activities

Students who participate in any extra-curricular activity, such as sports, drama, or music, should be at school the day of the after-school or evening-activity. The day following an evening extra-curricular activity, students should be here for the regularly scheduled classes. Extra-curricular is just that--extra--and should not take priority over class work. This applies to practices as well. If a child is too sick to be at school, we assume he/she is too sick to be at a practice or an event.
